Thomas Tang
Moot Court

About the Competition

Thomas Tang National Moot Court Competition is an annual appellate advocacy competition sponsored by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. The competition was founded in 1993 and named after Thomas Tang, a federal judge on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the first American of Chinese descent appointed to the federal judiciary. In honor of Judge Tang's legacy, the competition addresses issues of constitutional law and civil rights and brings together competitors from law schools throughout the nation.
The University of Washington sends two teams, comprised of one second-year student and one third-year student, to the regional competition each year. The teams separately write an appellate brief as respondent or petitioner and submit their work in late September. Following the brief submission, the two teams come together, prepare for oral argument on both sides, and practice before an esteemed group of coaches comprised largely of Tang alumni. The regional competition occurs in early-mid October, followed by the national competition in early November.
For more information about the Thomas Tang Competition, see the competition website.
