About
The Order of Barristers is a national honorary organization that encourages oral advocacy and brief writing skills through the University of Washington School of Law advocacy programs. The Order provides national recognition for individuals who participate and excel in advocacy programs at their respective schools.
Eligible students may apply for membership in The Order of Barristers in the Spring of their 3L year, as outlined here. You can also find more information about applying to The Order in the MCHB Bylaws.
Eligible students may apply for membership in The Order of Barristers in the Spring of their 3L year, as outlined here. You can also find more information about applying to The Order in the MCHB Bylaws.
Eligibility
Applicants must be graduating 3Ls who have competed in at least two different moot court or mock trial competitions. Participating in the same competition in two different years (e.g., competing in the Falknor Competition during both 2L and 3L years) does not fulfill this requirement. Students do not need to have participated in the Moot Court Honor Board to apply.
Selection Process
Three faculty members will be appointed by the Dean to the Selection Committee. The Selection Committee will select as many or as few applicants that the Committee feels are deserving of an invitation, up to the maximum number permitted by UWLS Chapter of the Order of the Barristers’ constitution (in past years, this has generally been ten students). After the Committee makes its selections, the Dean will review the selections and validate or amend them.
Criteria
The Committee uses the following criteria in making its selection for membership:
- Membership on intercollegiate teams and performance in intercollegiate competitions, OR participation in tryouts for intercollegiate teams
- Participation and performance in intramural competitions
- Participation and performance in the administration of the school's moot court programs. This includes, but is not limited to, substantial work completed as a Moot Court Honor Board member
- Participation and performance in any programs for the instruction of other law students in brief writing and/or oral advocacy skills
- Performance record in the school's brief writing and/or oral advocacy courses
